December Update

Dear VCE Families,

I hope you are staying dry and safe with all the rain these days. Thank you for sending your child with the right gear to have a warm and dry day at school. As we near the holiday, it is important to keep to the same sleep schedule and routines. We still have learning to do and we want the students to be ready to learn and engaged.

I hope everyone has a great weekend! We might even get a little snow!

Sincerely,
Ms. Hain
VCE Principal

Classroom Learning in Action

This month's spotlight:

Ms. Jones (Kindergarten/Grade 1)

We have been using the outdoor classroom to explore the changing seasons and wondered as a class where all theJones bugs had gone. We searched for signs of bugs and learned that some bugs find warm places to hibernate, some leave for warmer climates and some don’t survive the winter and will start their life cycle in the spring. We will continue to observe the changes happening in our outdoor classroom and find how other animals adapt the the changing seasons.

Community Christmas Care

Valleycliffe is once again participating in Community Christmas Care. For those who aren't familiar, they provide Christmas hampers to families and individuals in need in Squamish. Due to COVID restrictions, they have a smaller group of volunteers this year so they're unable to collect non-perishable foods. They are still collecting new unwrapped toys and cash donations.

With that in mind, we're holding a friendly competition! The class that collects the most items will get the opportunity to throw a pie at Ms. Hain! All donations must be received by the morning of December 9.

Winter Concert in January! Dancing

This year we are excited to be hosting Sound Kreation in January to teach the students hip hop dancing in person! This will be our virtual winter concert for families and therefore won't take place before the break.

IMPORTANT! When to expect report cards/points of progress:

Option 1 (timely evidence): Reminder that if your child’s class is in this option for reporting, their point of progress will be available on MyEd Parent Portal no later than January 15th.Teachers will let families know when to expect these reports, timing is based on when it fits with the evidence they are sharing for Term 1 (this may be different timing than other classes). Teachers will also be in touch (if they haven't already) on when conferences are for your child.

Option 2: Reminder that if your child’s class is in this option for reporting, these reports will be uploaded to the MyEd parent portal on Monday, December 6th for your viewing. You will have access to these reports in MyEd for 3 weeks.

New families, you would have received an email at the beginning of the year from our system administrator providing you with a log in and temporary password, if you didn’t receive this email, please first check your junk mail and if it’s not there, let me know and I will have him generate another one for you.

Please note, the first time you log in it cannot be from a mobile device. Make sure you keep your log in and password in a safe place for future use. If you have forgotten your login information, use the information provided below to gain access.

Common to both (please read):

  • We will no longer send home paper reports as report cards will be posted on the MyEd Parent Portal. MyEd features a family portal which parents/guardians and students can view student information and to retrieve various publications including report cards.
  • You will receive an email from us when your child’s report has been posted to the portal and there will be a window of time to access this information.
  • If you do not have the information to access MyEd, please contact the office.
  • If you need a paper copy, please let your child’s teacher know a head of time.

Here are two videos that you may find helpful. Please note that mobile devices have limited ability with this application.

I hope you will find the portal to be a convenient and useful service.

Little Shop of Wonders

On December 14 the PAC is hosting a holiday shopping event where students will have the opportunity to buy gifts for $1 each, for their immediate family, living in their household. We understand that family make-up is different for everyone. We ask that you set thePresent expectation with your child so that they are not disappointed. Please only send the amount of money that coordinates with the number of members in your household. For example: If there are only 3 additional family members in your household, please only send $3.

We need donations to help make this event a success! If you have any items that are in very good, reusable condition (think something that you would like to receive as a gift, nothing broken or worn out) you can donate the items at the office until December 13. We are also accepting donations of gift bags and gift wrap. Please note that this year due to COVID restrictions we will not be allowing families with younger siblings into the gym at the end of the day.

December birthdays:Balloons

We want to wish a happy birthday to all of our students born in December! To celebrate, each student gets to choose a birthday book on the last Friday before Winter Break.
