2022 November 25

Thank you to all the families that are keeping their children home when they are sick.  This really does help keep to community healthier.  Please remind your children to wash their hands frequently.  We have been experiencing a high rate of absenteeism.

Communicable Disease Update

The Provincial Health Officer, Dr. Bonnie Henry, recently gave an update on the respiratory illness season. Key messages included:

  • Vaccination remains the best defense against COVID-19 and influenza.
  • People are encouraged to practice health awareness, including regularly checking themselves and their children for symptoms of respiratory illness, and to stay home when sick.
  • Everyone should be washing hands regularly and practicing respiratory etiquette
  • Masks should be worn if a person has mild symptoms of illness.

There are no changes to the Provincial Communicable Disease Guidelines for K–12 School Settings. Districts and schools are encouraged to remind everyone:

  • to practice health awareness and to stay home when sick.
  • that schools are supportive environments for mask wearing, and a person’s choice should be supported and respected. Evidence-based, trusted information on masks is available from BCCDC.

Music Production Course

The Children have been very excitedly working with Hayley writing lyrics and producing sounds for a number of songs.  Hayley is very pleased with the raw creativity that the students share and told me that she has learned so much about song writing from them.  Everyone is truly happy with this experience.

Hayley looks forward to sharing at least four songs with all families after this seven day collaboration.

Thank you to the PAC for making this experience a reality!

Community Christmas Care

We will be supporting Community Christmas Care this year with a fun competition! Starting Monday, November 28 until Thursday, December 8 we will be having a class vs. class competition to see which class can collect the most new, unwrapped toys and gift cards with the winning class getting the opportunity to throw pie at Mr. Jakob! They have respectfully requested gift card donations in place of food items this year.

Movember Moustaches for Mental Health

Staff have been growing moustaches this month to promote mental health at our school. To close off the month next week (Nov. 28th - 30th), we are collecting donations for the Kids Help Phone since we want to remind kids it is important to reach out and talk with others if they are ever struggling. Students are encourage to bring in $1 or $2 and can choose to put it in 1 of 2 jars. They can choose the ‘SAVE IT JAR’ and force the staff to keep the moustaches for another week, or they can put it in the ‘SHAVE IT JAR’ and save Valleycliffe from the embarrassment of having to see these moustaches on a daily basis. For more information, watch this video. Thanks for your support!

Lovable Labels

Do you notice your child comes home with less clothing than the went to school with?  Have you noticed how much clothing is filling the Lost and Found?  Consider putting your child’s name in the clothing with Lovable Labels20% of your purchase will support Valleycliffe Elementary School.

Affordability Fund Update For Families

We would like to update you on the grant from the Ministry of Education and Childcare to make back-to-school more affordable for students and their families struggling with rising costs of living due to global inflation. We are mindful that many families in our community are struggling with the increased cost of living. We want every family to know that they are eligible for financial assistance through the Student & Family Affordability fund, no questions asked.

This one-time funding support will be allocated towards school-related expenses, including:

- School/Course Supplies

- Family food security (groceries)

- Athletic wear (for school athletics)

- PAC hot lunch

- Basic Necessities

- Clothing/footwear

We are happy to announce that we will partner with our local food banks to specifically provide more food for school breakfast, lunch or snack programs to meet the growing needs of students. We will work with our PAC to continue the conversation on how to use this fund (within the above criteria) to best support those students and families experiencing financial hardship.

If you would like to access the affordability fund, please reach out to me or a member of our administrative team, and we will be happy to assist you.
